The hospital has 183 beds and employs around 400 staff, including 103 doctors (data from 2016). It also serves as the academic clinical hospital of the University of Hamburg. The history of the facility dates back to May 20, 1900, when Pastor Johannes Meyer, along with the nuns, founded Mariahilf Krankenhaus. Despite the Protestant character of northern Germany, the Catholic community on the south side of the Elbe grew dynamically due to the expansion of the Hamburg port. The hospital quickly expanded thanks to the commitment of the nuns. The range of services includes:
