'Not about revenge, but about memory!' On Sunday, July 12, in the National Shrine of Our Lady of Częstochowa in American Częstochowa, for the seventh time, a commemoration event will take place to honor the victims of the Wołyń Massacre and the Augustów Roundup. We invite you to join us at 11:15 AM by the Husarz Monument, where we will read the call to memory, recite prayers for the deceased, light candles, and lay flowers. Then, during the Mass at 12:30 PM, we will pray for the souls of the victims of the Augustów Roundup and the Wołyń Massacre. 83 years ago, on July 11, 1943, in around 100 villages in Wołyń and Eastern Little Poland, the largest wave of murders on Poles by Ukrainian nationalists took place. This day is known as 'Bloody Sunday.' On that day alone, about 10,000 Poles - mainly women, children, and the elderly - were killed. Many priests were also murdered. In total, more than 130,000 Poles were murdered in the genocide that took place between 1942-1947. 81 years ago, on July 12, 1945, units of the Red Army and NKVD, supported by UB functionaries and soldiers of the 1st Prague Infantry Regiment, carried out a pacification of the Augustów Forest and its surroundings. Around 600 Poles were arrested and taken to an unknown location, and their trail went cold. They were most likely taken to the area near Grodno and murdered there. This was the largest crime against Poles after the end of World War II. We warmly invite you to participate in the commemorations.
