A miniature city floating in dark space can be more than just a collection of landmarks. The best diorama also shows the rhythm of the streets, the landscape, everyday life, and one detail that tells a story about the place. In this guide, you will design such a graphic step by step, with original examples from Chicago and Kraków.

Illustrations are artistic interpretations. AI may confuse architecture and the placement of buildings, so check the details before using the graphics as informational material.

Idea: A Small World, Not a Catalog of Attractions

“Spherical diorama” is an image where buildings and roads are arranged around a small, floating planet. You do not need to know 3D graphics. Three decisions are important: what we recognize as the given city, how the elements connect spatially, and where the viewer looks. If you list twenty landmarks, the model often glues them together without logic. Choose three or four themes and add an everyday detail.

Before the Prompt, Make a Small City Plan

LayerChicagoKraków
Dominant FeatureSkyscrapers and skyline over the lakeTowers of the old town and rooftops of tenement houses
TrafficRailway viaduct, taxis, pedestriansTram, walkers, cobbled streets
LandscapeLake shore, cool mistVistula River, trees by the river
Surprise ElementStrip of lake water wraps around the lower part of the sphereLight trails of the tram create a subtle ring

The unique element should stem from the character of the place. Surrealism works best when one motif breaks reality while the rest looks like a credible model. An additional small figure standing next to the planet emphasizes the scale. It does not have to be the hero of the scene.

Prompt: Chicago

Diorama Chicago · vertical graphic 4:5

Create an original vertical illustration 4:5: a tiny spherical world inspired by Chicago floats in deep, almost black space. This is a handcrafted, extremely detailed diorama viewed from a three-quarters angle. At the top of the sphere, a dense silhouette of American skyscrapers, streets, and elevated railway, tiny trains, pedestrians, trees, and warm window lights. Below, the lake shore; a narrow blue ribbon of water wraps around a fragment of the planet according to its curvature.

Buildings have logical foundations and a common scale. Tiny cars move along the roads, not floating randomly. Cool twilight, warm light points, natural textures of the model, soft mist, sharp details in the center, and subtle depth around the edges. Next to the world stands a very small silhouette of an observer, showing the scale. Clean dark background, plenty of free space. No captions, logos, random foreign landmarks, or collages.

Prompt: Kraków

Original miniature diorama of Kraków with historical rooftops and the Vistula River
Kraków: warm rooftops, river, and a delicate light ring of the tram.
Diorama Kraków · vertical graphic 4:5

Create a vertical composition 4:5 with a miniature, floating sphere depicting an artistic interpretation of Kraków. Historical rooftops of tenement houses, towers of the old town, and the outline of buildings over the Vistula rise from the curvature of the small planet. Cobblestone streets connect logically, a tiny tram travels along the tracks, and solitary pedestrians and trees stand in the squares. The Vistula flows around the lower part of the world. The only surrealistic accent: a warm trail of tram lights subtly creates a ring around a fragment of the sphere.

The model has realistic materials: stone, tiles, water, and metal. The golden hour transitions into a navy evening. Warm windows contrast with the dark, minimalist background. A small figure observes the sphere from the outside. Maintain one consistent camera angle and a readable hierarchy of buildings. No captions, logos, flat collages, or random landmarks from other cities.

How to Use Your Own Reference Photo

You can include a photo of a street, a characteristic roof, or a skyline. Specify whether it should provide architecture, colors, or layout. Do not ask to copy the entire photograph onto the curved sphere if the perspective does not fit. Two photos from a similar viewpoint are usually easier to reconcile than five conflicting views. Ensure you have the right to use the reference.

Add Captions After Generation

The generator may distort the name of the city and a short slogan. Therefore, examples intentionally lack text. Leave a blank space in the prompt, download the graphic, and add the title in the editor. Use the name of the place and one of your own sentences, for example, “The city between the river and the evening light.” Check the contrast of the text on the phone screen.

Improve One Thing at a Time

  • The city is unrecognizable: indicate two dominant features and one type of transport, remove the rest of the list.
  • Buildings hang without foundations: add roads, foundations, and a natural connection to the curvature of the sphere.
  • The sphere is overloaded: increase the dark space around and remove one landmark.
  • AI confuses locations: compare with real photos and correct the name of the element or treat the graphic as a free interpretation.
