Pension from Australia and ZUS: Age Pension, superannuation, and social security agreement (2026)

The Age Pension (up to ~1200 AUD/2 weeks) depends on years of residence and asset testing – the Polish ZUS pension reduces it, and payments abroad are proportional to AWLR (full amount for 35 years). The 2010 agreement sums periods (only 12 months of Australian residency required), superannuation remains until age 60 (outside the agreement!), and tax – a rare luxury – is paid only in the country of residence (Article 18).

The Australian pension system differs from anything we know in Europe: the state Age Pension does not depend on contributions, but on years of residence and asset testing, while real money is held in private superannuation, which is not covered by any international agreement. The Polish-Australian social security agreement (since October 1, 2010) allows for the summation of periods and the collection of benefits in both countries – but it has pitfalls: the Polish ZUS pension reduces the Age Pension in the income test, payments abroad are proportional to the years worked in Australia, and superannuation must be left in Australia until the age of sixty. All information below is based on official documents (bilingual Centrelink/ZUS forms, text of the tax agreement) – with amounts from March 2026.

Age Pension: pension for residence, not for contributions

  • Conditions: age 67 (born from 1957) + at least 10 years of residence in Australia. The agreement saves shorter tenure: only a minimum of 12 months of Australian residency (between age 16 and retirement age) is required, and Polish insurance periods will complete the missing years to ten.
  • Rates (from March 20, 2026): a maximum of about 1200.90 AUD every two weeks for a single person (couples: about 905.20 AUD each), with supplements; indexed every six months (March/September).
  • Income and asset test: Age Pension is a social benefit – income counts (including specifically mentioned in the forms foreign pension, i.e., your ZUS – reduction of about 50 cents for every dollar over the exempt amount) and assets (the home you live in is excluded). When planning, count both benefits together, not separately.
  • Payment to Poland: after 26 weeks outside Australia, the rate becomes proportional to Australian Working Life Residence: full requires 35 years, less = fraction (e.g., 10 years → 10/35 of the rate). Supplements diminish abroad (Pension Supplement to the base rate, Energy Supplement expires), and from around September 2026, further restrictions on the supplement are planned when moving permanently – check the state of regulations before deciding to return.

Superannuation: outside the agreement, but it's your money

The agreement does not cover super (confirmed directly in the official discussion: it only concerns Age Pension). Practical consequences for returnees: (1) a citizen/permanent resident cannot withdraw super due to emigration – early withdrawal (DASP) is only for holders of temporary visas; (2) funds remain invested in Australia until age 60 (after that, withdrawals from the fund are tax-free in Australia); (3) there is no transfer to the Polish system (IKE/ZUS) – the only foreign direction is New Zealand. (4) Polish side: taxation of super withdrawals for Polish residents is an area not established in interpretative practice (disputes over qualification under Article 18 of the agreement and exemption for employee programs) – before a larger withdrawal, apply for an individual interpretation. Do not trust anyone who provides a "certain" rule here.

Conclusion: across the border in both directions

You live in Poland – apply for Age Pension

The bilingual package AU-PL 3 (+ income and asset form AU-PL 4) is submitted through ZUS/KRUS, which forwards it to Services Australia (International Services, Canberra; free hotline from Poland: 00 800 61 11 220). The application can be submitted up to 13 weeks before reaching retirement age.

You live in Australia – apply for ZUS/KRUS

Form PL-AU 3 (pension/rent; PL-AU 4 family pension, PL-AU 5 funeral benefit) – the confirming section is filled out by Centrelink, which forwards the application to Poland; documents are certified by Centrelink, a notary, or the Polish consul. The form includes a section with BIC/SWIFT – the Polish pension will come directly to the Australian account.

Annual life certification

ZUS sends a form for confirmation once a year – the signature is certified by an authorized institution in Australia or the Polish consulate (offices: embassy in Canberra, consulate general in Sydney). No response = suspension of payment.

Taxes: a rare luxury – only the country of residence

  • Article 18 of the tax agreement from 1991 (synthetic text from MLI verified): pensions and annuities are taxed only in the country of residence. You live in Poland → Age Pension is settled only in the Polish PIT (Australia does not withhold); you live in Australia → ZUS is taxed only in Australia (income in ATO settlement; the Polish NFZ contribution is not withheld from residents of Australia).
  • The proportional deduction method from the agreement applies to other incomes – with pensions, there is usually nothing to deduct because you pay tax once. Simple and fair.
  • The thirteenth ZUS pension (in 2026, 1978.49 PLN gross) is paid automatically along with the benefit – also transferred to Australia; just remember that it counts in the Australian income test.

KRUS is also in the agreement

Farmers: the agreement fully covers KRUS benefits (agricultural pensions, annuities, funeral benefits, one-time accident compensations) – Australian periods of residence complete the missing agricultural tenure, and the forms (PL-AU/AU-PL) are common; KRUS handles matters in parallel with ZUS.

Strategy for returnees to Poland: (1) calculate your AWLR – each year of "working life" in Australia is 1/35 of the rate abroad; (2) remember the mutual impact: ZUS will reduce your Age Pension (income test), but Age Pension does not reduce ZUS; (3) leave super in a good, cheap fund until sixty and update your contact details (search for lost accounts through ATO); (4) before withdrawing super as a Polish resident – individual interpretation; (5) travel and tax formalities between countries – in the guide on travel and formalities Poland–Australia.
