Australia welcomes Poles exceptionally hospitably – the eVisitor visa is completely free – but at the airport, they are greeted by the strictest biosecurity control in the world: undeclared sausage in a suitcase can lead to a fine of up to 6600 AUD, and even visa cancellation with a three-year entry ban. This guide collects the rules of travel and formalities between Poland and Australia: visas (including longer options for parents), customs and quarantine, flights without direct connections, driver's licenses (with an unpleasant surprise in NSW), taxes upon departure and return, and the draconian procedure for transporting pets. Facts from the Home Affairs, ABF, ATO, and podatki.gov.pl websites.
Visas: eVisitor for Free, Longer – Visitor 600
| Option | For whom / conditions |
|---|---|
| eVisitor (651) | Poles on the eligible list; free; valid for 12 months, multiple entries, up to 3 months stay per entry; application online from outside Australia; cannot be extended on-site. (Note: ETA 601 for 20 AUD is a system for other countries – Polish passports will not receive it; “eVisitor intermediaries” charge fees for a free service.) |
| Visitor 600 – Tourist | Stay up to 12 months; parents of Australian citizens/residents can get a visa valid for longer than 12 months – this is the standard path for long visits to children. Check the fee in the official Visa Pricing Estimator (changes every year on July 1). |
| Visitor 600 – Sponsored Family | Sponsored by a relative in Australia; the office may require a bond of 5000–15 000 AUD per person (refundable after departure in accordance with the conditions). |
On the plane, you fill out the Incoming Passenger Card (Incoming Passenger Card, in English – false declarations = penalties and denial of entry); on selected Qantas flights to Brisbane/Sydney/Melbourne, a digital declaration is piloted in the app. The reverse direction – an Australian spouse to Poland: visa-free for 90/180, biometric checks at the border EES, ETIAS expected at the end of 2026 (details in the guide about EES and ETIAS); living “privately” longer, remember to register.
Biosecurity: Declare Everything or Pay
Rule No. 1 in Australia: declare every food, plant, and animal product – there are no penalties for honest declarations (or disposal in bins before inspection); undeclared items risk a fine of up to 6600 AUD, civil or criminal proceedings, and for tourists – visa cancellation and a 3-year entry ban. Inspections involve x-rays, dogs, and searches. Practice for a Polish suitcase: homemade cold cuts and kabanos will not meet import conditions – they will be confiscated; cheeses and butter are conditionally allowed (commercially packaged, from a country free of foot-and-mouth disease, up to 10 kg) – but always subject to declaration and inspection. Doubts are resolved by the official BICON database.
- Customs limits: goods up to 900 AUD (adults; children 450 – families can combine limits), alcohol 2.25 l, tobacco – only 25 cigarettes.
- Cash: declaration from 10 000 AUD (or equivalent) upon entry and exit; checks and bearer instruments – to be presented on request regardless of the amount.
- On the way back to Poland: EU standard – 430 EUR, prohibition on meat and dairy from outside the EU (guide on Polish customs).
Flight and Passenger Rights: Australia Lags Behind
There are no direct flights from Poland to Australia – the standard is one layover (Doha, Dubai, Singapore, Istanbul), totaling ~20–24 hours of travel. A legal asymmetry worth knowing: Australia has no equivalent to EU261 – an aviation ombudsman is just being established (the statutory Aviation Ombuds Scheme is expected in 2026; for now, a temporary representative without decision-making powers is in place), so for delays within Australia, you must file a complaint with the airline and rely on general consumer law. However, segments from EU airports (e.g., Warsaw–Doha) are subject to EU261 regardless of the carrier – direct claims there (guide on passenger rights).
Driver's License: A Surprise in NSW
- Visiting NSW (Sydney): you can drive on a valid Polish driver's license with an English translation or IDP; guests staying over 6 months need a temporary NSW license.
- Settling in NSW: permanent residents have 3 months to obtain a local license – and Poland is not on the list of recognized countries (Germany, Croatia, and the USA are on it), so you will face a knowledge test (DKT) and a practical exam. Other states have their own lists – check locally before moving.
- Australians in Poland: up to 6 months on an Australian license + mandatory IDP (Smartraveller warns that driving without it is a serious offense); then exchange for a Polish one. And a cultural shock both ways: the Polish alcohol limit is 0.2‰.
Taxes: Departure, Return, and One Important Correction
- 1991 Agreement without method change through MLI – contrary to popular belief, Australia is not among the countries for which MLI has changed the method (confirmed on podatki.gov.pl); settlements continue as before, with the proportional deduction method stated in the agreement itself.
- Australian residency: “resides” test + auxiliary tests (domicile, 183 days); resident rates 2025–26: tax-free threshold 18,200 AUD, then 16/30/37/45% + Medicare levy 2%.
- Departure from Australia: loss of residency triggers deemed disposal of assets other than Australian real estate (CGT) – you can choose to defer (assets wait as “taxable Australian property” until actual sale). Superannuation remains until age sixty (DASP only for temporary visas – not for citizens/PR); details in the guide on Australian pensions and ZUS.
- Return to Poland: Australia is directly on the list of countries eligible for return relief (85,528 PLN/year for 4 years); AUD transfers via SWIFT/fintechs (SEPA covers only euros); family donations – SD-Z2 within 6 months (from January 7, 2026, a delayed deadline can be restored upon request if the delay was not intentional).
Pet to Australia: A Six-Month Operation
Australia treats dogs and cats as potential biological threats: Poland is in group 3 of approved countries, but the procedure requires an import permit (BICON), microchip, rabies vaccination with antibody testing (RNATT), and – without exceptions – 180 days of waiting from the sample collection, and upon arrival, quarantine at the only facility in Mickleham near Melbourne (minimum 10–30 days). Government fees alone are about 2000–3000 AUD, and with transport and an agent – several thousand PLN. Plan at least 7–8 months before moving.
Polish Institutions
Consular matters are handled by the embassy in Canberra and the consulate general in Sydney (in Melbourne, honorary consul + periodic passport duty in Sydney). Passport fees: standard 247 AUD (reduced 124, children under 12 years 80). Appointments via e-Konsulat; retirees remember to submit the annual life certificate for ZUS.
Traveler's Checklist: (1) eVisitor only through the official site immi.homeaffairs.gov.au – for free; (2) parents for longer → Visitor 600 (for parents, it can be valid for over a year); (3) suitcase: declare every food – honesty costs nothing, silence can cost up to 6600 AUD; (4) cash over 10,000 AUD – declaration; (5) delays: EU261 claims only for segments from the EU; (6) moving with a pet → start the procedure over six months in advance.
