Subaccount in ZUS: what it is, how to check it, valorization, inheritance, and division during divorce (2026)

Who has a subaccount in ZUS and where the money comes from, valorization linked to GDP growth (+10.61% in 2026), checking in eZUS in 5 minutes, safety slider, division during divorce and inheritance, and the UWU form. Legal status: July 2026, verified against legal texts and zus.pl.

A subaccount in ZUS is probably the largest amount of money you are unaware of: a separate, inheritable part of your pension account, valorized by GDP growth (in 2026 by as much as 10.61%), which can be divided during divorce and paid out to loved ones after death. For millions of Poles, ZUS manages it automatically – and at the same time, "the Institution no longer sends paper letters with information about the account balance," so without logging into eZUS, you will never see these amounts. This guide explains everything: who has a subaccount, where the money comes from, how to check it in 5 minutes, what happens to it at retirement, during divorce, and after death.

Last verification: July 21, 2026. Informational material – it is not legal or retirement advice. For individual matters, use eZUS, the ZUS helpline, or visit a facility.

In brief

Key principles
  • Who has a subaccount: everyone born after 1968 – automatically; those born between 1949 and 1968 – only if they joined OFE.
  • 7.3% of your pension contribution base goes there (or 4.38% if 2.92% goes to OFE).
  • Valorization of the subaccount = average nominal GDP growth over 5 years and is never negative (June 2026: +10.61%; main account: +9.81%).
  • You can check it in 5 minutes after logging into eZUS (formerly PUE) or in the mZUS app – paper information is only sent upon request.
  • Unlike the main account, the funds in the subaccount are subject to division and inheritance: during divorce, half of the "assets" goes to the subaccount of the ex-spouse, after death – money for the spouse, designated persons, or heirs.
  • Ten years before retirement, a safety slider operates: funds from OFE are gradually transferred to the subaccount.
  • You cannot withdraw from the subaccount during your lifetime – it increases your pension (exception: periodic capital pension for women aged 60–65).
  • You indicate entitled persons using the UWU form – do this to save your loved ones from inheritance proceedings.

What is a subaccount and where does the money come from

  • A subaccount is a separate part of your insured account in ZUS (Article 40a of the Social Insurance System Act, consolidated text Dz.U. 2026 item 199), recorded alongside the "main account."
  • Division of the pension contribution 19.52% (Article 22): if you do not transfer contributions to OFE – 7.3% of the base goes to the subaccount; if you are in OFE – 4.38% to the subaccount and 2.92% to OFE. The rest (12.22%) funds the main account.
  • 51.5% of the funds from OFE were also transferred to the subaccount during the 2014 reform (valuation as of January 31, 2014) – which is why it can be surprisingly well-funded.
  • OFE/ZUS choice windows open every 4 years (April–July: 2016, 2020, 2024 – next in 2028, Article 39a).
  • Valorization (Article 40c): every year from June 1, with a rate equal to the average annual dynamics of GDP at current prices over the last 5 years; the balance of the subaccount cannot decrease. The main account is valorized by inflation plus the real increase in the contribution fund – historically, these are two different rates.

How to check your subaccount in 5 minutes

  1. Log in to eZUS

Go to zus.pl/ezus/logowanie – log in via login.gov.pl (trusted profile, electronic banking, mObywatel, e-ID) or with your eZUS login. You can create an account entirely online.

  2. Insured Panel → Account Status Information

You will see the account and subaccount balance broken down by contributions and valorizations. The Annual Information on the Insured Account Status (IOSKU) is available electronically in eZUS and the mZUS app – "paper" is only available upon request.

  3. Pension calculator

There you can check the projected pension considering the funds in the subaccount.

  4. Don’t know if you are (were) in OFE?

ZUS maintains the Central Register of OFE Members (Article 33(1)(5)) – your membership is listed in the account status information, and in case of doubt, submit a request to ZUS. The family of a deceased member will learn about OFE from ZUS after presenting the death certificate and documents of kinship.

  5. Indicate entitled persons (UWU form)

You can indicate (and change) at any time who will receive the funds from the subaccount after your death – this is the UWU form. Without indication, the money will go through inheritance, which is slower and involves formalities.

What happens to the funds in the subaccount

EventEffect on the subaccount
PensionThe capital of the subaccount increases the basis for calculating your pension; there are no "cash" withdrawals from the subaccount.
Women aged 60–65Possible periodic capital pension from the subaccount (for OFE members, when the subaccount balance ≥ 20 times the care allowance) – paid until the age of 65.
10 years before retirement ageSafety slider: contributions to OFE cease, and funds from OFE are transferred monthly to the subaccount (Article 100c of the OFE Act); a second trigger from September 1, 2024: application for a teacher's pension.
Divorce / annulment of marriage / separationFunds accumulated during the marriage are subject to division – half goes to the ex-spouse's subaccount (ZUS will create a subaccount for them if they do not have one) – Article 40e.
DeathHalf of the "marital" funds are transferred to the widow/widower's subaccount, the rest is paid to designated persons (UWU), and in their absence, it goes to the estate – details in the inheritance guide for the subaccount.
A boundary that few know about

The division of the subaccount (divorce, death) is only possible if the event occurred no later than on the day of submitting the pension application after the age of 65 / acquiring the right to it / reaching 65 years while receiving a periodic capital pension (Article 40e(4)). Beyond this boundary, the death of a pensioner triggers a different mechanism – guaranteed payment (3 years of protection, counter 1/37 monthly).

Subaccount vs. main account – what are the differences

Common mistakes and myths

  • "I don't have OFE, so I don't have a subaccount" – those born after 1968 always have a subaccount, regardless of the decision about OFE.
  • Not indicating entitled persons – the family then waits for the determination of inheritance acquisition instead of receiving payment with a simple request.
  • Outdated indications after divorce/marriage – the UWU disposition can and should be updated.
  • Waiting for a letter from ZUS – paper information comes only upon request; you check your account status yourself in eZUS/mZUS.
  • "The state took money from OFE" – 51.5% of the funds from 2014 are recorded in your subaccount, valorized and inheritable; they can be politically debated, but accounting-wise they are assigned to you.
  • Confusing the subaccount with the OFE account – these are two different accounts (ZUS vs fund); after death, the procedure starts with OFE if the deceased was a member.

Frequently asked questions

How much is typically in the subaccount?

ZUS does not publish an official average balance of the subaccount. For comparison: according to KNF, the average account in OFE at the end of 2024 is 14,937 PLN – and subaccounts can be larger (51.5% of the funds from OFE from 2014 plus contributions and valorizations went there). You will see your exact amount in eZUS.

Can I withdraw money from the subaccount before retirement?

No – the law does not provide for withdrawals on demand. The funds will materialize as a higher pension, and earlier they are only "released" in case of divorce (transfer) and death (payment to loved ones).

I live abroad. Do I have access to the subaccount?

Yes – eZUS works from anywhere in the world (you can also confirm your trusted profile at the consulate). Years of work abroad do not contribute to the subaccount (contributions only flow from Polish insurance), but previously accumulated funds are valorized and inheritable under normal rules.

A loved one has passed away – how do I recover funds from their subaccount?

If they were a member of OFE – you first submit a request to OFE (the fund notifies ZUS, which divides the subaccount "mirror-like" within 3 months); if not – the USS request goes directly to ZUS. The request is not time-limited. The entire process step by step: funds from the subaccount after the deceased and OFE after death.

Does divorce automatically divide the subaccount?

The division occurs upon request (USS form with documents regarding the cessation of joint ownership) – it does not happen automatically. It includes funds accumulated during the marriage and requires that the divorce occurs before the "retirement boundary" from Article 40e(4).

Fact-check summary

Verification: July 21, 2026

Definitely true (verified in consolidated texts: Social Insurance System Act – Dz.U. 2026 item 199, OFE Act – Dz.U. 2024 item 1113, Pension Act – Dz.U. 2025 item 1749, Capital Pension Act – Dz.U. 2018 item 926, and on zus.pl): definition and management of the subaccount (Article 40a); division of contributions 7.3% / 4.38% + 2.92% (Article 22(3)); circle of holders – after 1968 always, 1949–1968 only with OFE (Article 111, zus.pl); transfer windows every 4 years since 2016 (Article 39a); GDP valorization over 5 years, non-negative, from June 1 (Article 40c) – 2026: +10.61% subaccount, +9.81% main account; slider 10 years before retirement + teacher trigger from September 1, 2024 (Article 100c of the OFE Act); division during divorce/death with the boundary from Article 40e(4); periodic capital pension 60–65 with balance ≥ 20× care allowance (Articles 7–8 of the Capital Pension Act); Central Register of OFE Members in ZUS (Article 33(1)(5)); IOSKU electronically, paper upon request (ZUS communication); forms USS/UWU.

Probably true: comparative average OFE 14,937 PLN (KNF, end of 2024); practice of establishing OFE for the deceased through a request to ZUS.

What is uncertain / variable: future valorization rates; the fate of the second pillar in subsequent reforms.

Common myth: "ZUS does not inherit anything" (subaccount – is inheritable) and "without OFE there is no subaccount" (those born after 1968 always have it).
