Travel Between Poland and the UK Post-Brexit: ETA, Passport, Customs, and Food Bans (2026)

ETA for £20 for everyone (including infants) – but not for settled status holders, who can still enter with their ID; the meat and dairy ban applies both ways (kabanosy and cheddar will be confiscated), customs limits and cash £10k/10k EUR, EU pet passports only work to GB, UK261 passenger rights (£220/£350), and hope for a negotiated SPS agreement.

The Poland–UK journey looks completely different today than before Brexit: without an ETA (£20!), you won't board the plane, kabanosy in your suitcase will end up in the bin at Stansted (and British cheddar at Okęcie), and a British spouse undergoes EES biometrics in Poland. This guide collects all the rules for 2026 in both directions – documents, customs, cash, pets, and passenger rights – based on official gov.uk and European Commission websites. Plus, the news that the entire Polish community has been waiting for: the negotiated UK–EU sanitary agreement is finally set to lift food bans.

Documents: Who Needs What

TravelerTo the UK
Polish citizen without settled status (e.g., family visiting)Passport (ID card not accepted) + ETA; visa-free stay up to 6 months
Polish citizen with settled/pre-settled statusNo ETA (status = eVisa). Bonus confirmed on gov.uk: EUSS status holders can still enter with their ID card – biometric ID cards accepted "indefinitely"
Child/infantETA applies to everyone, including infants
Layover in the UKETA required when crossing border control; check airside transit rules before your flight
  • ETA (Electronic Travel Authorisation): applies to Poles from April 2, 2025; costs £20 (increased from £16 in April 2026), application via the "UK ETA" app or online, decision usually within 3 working days, valid for 2 years (or until passport expiry), multiple entries allowed.
  • The other way: British spouse/family travels to Poland visa-free (90/180 days), but from 2025/2026 undergoes EES biometric registration – details in our guide on the EES and ETIAS system. Important for dual citizens PL+UK (confirmed by FCDO): you cross the Polish border on your Polish passport or ID card.

Customs and Food: The Kabanosy Problem Works Both Ways

You cannot bring meat or dairy from the EU into the UK – since the spring outbreaks of foot-and-mouth disease in 2025, the ban includes pork, beef, lamb, game, and "products from these meats, such as sausages" (kabanosy are directly affected) as well as cheeses, butter, and yogurts. Exceptions: fish, poultry, eggs, honey, up to 2 kg of powdered milk for infants. Penalty for non-declaration: confiscation and a fine of up to £5000. The same applies the other way: the UK is a third country for the EU – cheddar and English sausages will be confiscated at the Polish border. Sending meat by post is also not allowed. Hope: the negotiated sanitary agreement (SPS) UK–EU is set to lift most of these controls – in December 2025, both sides announced the conclusion of talks "by the next summit"; check the current status before traveling.

Duty-Free LimitsEntry to the UKEntry to Poland (EU)
Goods in total£390430 EUR (by air/sea), 300 EUR by land
Alcohol42 l of beer + 18 l of wine + 4 l of spirits (or 9 l up to 22%)1 l of spirits (or 2 l up to 22%) + 4 l of wine + 16 l of beer
Cigarettes200 pcs.200 pcs. (by air)
Cash – declaration requirementfrom £10,000 (family total counts!)from 10,000 EUR

A British trap, which we also mentioned in the customs guide: exceeding the limit means you pay tax on the total category, not just the excess. Packages to the UK: gifts up to £39 without VAT, up to £135 without customs. Full import rules to Poland (medications, antiques, TAX FREE) – in the guide on transporting across the Polish border.

Pets: EU Passport Works Only One Way

  • Dog/cat from Poland to the UK: EU pet passport (issued, for example, by a Polish veterinarian) is accepted upon entry to GB + microchip, rabies vaccination (21 days waiting period), and dogs additionally need deworming for tapeworm 24–120 hours before arrival.
  • From the UK to Poland: GB residents cannot use pet passports (even EU ones) – an AHC certificate is required each time (valid for 10 days for entry to the EU, approx. £100–250 at the vet). A trick for Poles in the UK: during a visit to Poland, get your pet an EU passport from a Polish veterinarian – future returns to GB will be easier and cheaper.

Flights and Passenger Rights: The UK Sticks to Old (Good) Rules

Routes PL–UK are dominated by Ryanair and Wizz Air (plus LOT to London). Passenger rights are governed by "UK261" – the British version of EU regulations: compensation from 3 hours delay at the destination, £220 (up to 1500 km) or £350 (1500–3500 km) – covering practically all Polish routes; care (meals) after 2 hours on short routes; claims: first the airline, then ADR/CAA. Note: the EU261 reform adopted in 2026 does not apply to the UK – on routes to the UK, British amounts and thresholds remain unchanged (we describe EU rules and the reform in the guide on passenger rights).

Driving Through the Channel

  • Polish driving license in the UK: tourists drive without restrictions and without IDP; after settling, EU driving licenses are honored for years (DVLA exchange optional – details in the guide on exchanging driving licenses at DVLA).
  • British car in the EU: green card not needed (valid insurance is sufficient), but a "UK" identifier is required on the car unless the plate has the UK sign with the flag; UK drivers do not need IDP in Poland.
  • Remember Polish rules that surprise visitors from the Islands: alcohol limit 0.2‰ and priority for pedestrians entering crosswalks – summarized in the guide on driving in Poland.

What May Change ("Reset" UK–EU)

Since the summit in May 2025, London and Brussels have been negotiating a rapprochement package: a sanitary agreement SPS (which would lift "most controls and certificates" in food trade – meaning the end of the kabanosy and cheddar ban), a youth mobility program, and broader use of automatic gates by Britons after the implementation of EES; UK entry into Erasmus+ by 2027 is already confirmed. In December 2025, both sides declared their intention to conclude SPS negotiations by the next summit – but as of July 2026, food bans still apply.

Checklist Before Traveling: (1) family flying from Poland: passports + ETA (£20, "UK ETA" app, preferably a week in advance) – for everyone, including infants; (2) you with settled status: eVisa in your current passport (link your passport in your UKVI account!), ETA unnecessary; (3) suitcase: zero meat and dairy in both directions – you can bring fish, sweets, honey; (4) cash from £10,000 / 10,000 EUR – declaration; (5) dog: EU passport + deworming 1–5 days before entering GB; (6) delayed flight 3h+ – claim £220 from the airline.
