CDL – Truck Driver's License in the USA for Poles

Introduction

CDL (Commercial Driver License) is a professional driver's license in the USA. Classes: A (truck + trailer), B (truck without trailer), C (van/bus). The most profitable and sought-after is Class A. Poles are one of the largest groups in the industry – in Chicago, there are dozens of Polish transportation companies.

CDL Driver Salaries (2026)

• OTR (Over-the-Road, long-haul): $70,000-$100,000/year; weeks away from home
• Regional (1-3 days away from home): $60,000-$85,000/year
• Local (home daily): $50,000-$70,000/year
• Owner-operator (own truck): $100,000-$200,000 gross; after expenses $70,000-$120,000.
• Hazmat / Tankers / Doubles (with endorsements): +$5,000-$15,000/year

Requirements

• Age 21+ (interstate); 18+ only intrastate
• Valid SSN and right to work in the USA (EAD, Green Card, US citizen)
• Valid state driver's license (regular Class D) – at least one year of experience
• Clean driving history (DUI in 10 years = automatic disqualification)
• Medical exam (DOT physical) – every 2 years, approx. $100
• Good health – vision, hearing, blood pressure

Process of Obtaining CDL Class A

Step 1: CLP (Commercial Learner's Permit)

• Theoretical test at the state office (Secretary of State in IL, DMV in other states)
• 3 tests: General Knowledge, Combination Vehicles, Air Brakes
• Fee $30-$60
• CLP valid for 6 months – during this time you must pass the practical exam

Step 2: CDL School

• Required since 2022 ELDT (Entry-Level Driver Training) – FMCSA accredited training
• Cost: $4,000-$8,000; lasts 3-8 weeks
• Financing:
  • Some companies pay for training (CRST, Werner, Knight, Schneider) in exchange for a 6-24 month contract.
  • WIOA grant – free training for unemployed in some states
  • VA benefits for veterans

• Exam in Polish in Illinois (Secretary of State offers a translator)

Step 3: Practical Exam

• Three parts:
  • Vehicle Inspection (pre-trip) – describe visually 100+ points; the hardest!
  • Basic Vehicle Control – couples, uncouples, alley dock, parallel park
  • Road Test – driving on the road

• Can be retaken if failed

Step 4: Endorsements (additional)

• H (Hazmat) – hazardous materials; additional test + TSA background check ($87); +$5,000/year
• N (Tanker) – tankers; theoretical exam; +$3,000-$5,000/year
• T (Doubles/Triples) – two trailers; +$3,000-$5,000/year
• P (Passenger) – buses
• S (School bus) – school buses; requires clean background

First Job

• After obtaining CDL, most start in OTR (long-haul) – the most experience

• Used truck $80,000-$150,000; new $180,000-$250,000.
• Lease-purchase (carrier finances) – often inconvenient, "predatory leasing"
• Better: bank loan or cash
• Gross $200,000-$300,000/year; after expenses (fuel, insurance, payments, taxes) $70,000-$120,000 net

Life of a Driver

• OTR: weeks away from home (3-6 weeks); hard for family

Common Mistakes

• "Company-paid school" with a 12-24 month contract – trapping in a poor company

• Owner-operator too soon – without 3-5 years of experience, risk of bankruptcy
• Lease-purchase from carrier – often "predatory", better to buy a truck separately
