SCHUFA in Germany — what it is, how to check, credit score without history (2026)

SCHUFA (Schutzgemeinschaft für allgemeine Kreditsicherung) is the dominant German credit bureau — equivalent to Experian/Equifax, with a score range of 0-100 (the higher, the better), affecting rental housing, mortgages, credit cards, phone contracts, and leasing, with Polish newcomers in Germany often having a zero/null score, complicating various processes.

SCHUFA — what is it

SCHUFA Holding AG is the largest German credit bureau, a private company. It holds financial data on approximately 68 million Germans (and other residents).

Functionally similar to Equifax/Experian in the USA. The German financial ecosystem relies almost exclusively on SCHUFA for credit decisions.

SCHUFA score

Scale

  • 0-100 ("Bonitätsindex" or "SCHUFA-Score")
  • The higher, the better (unlike US FICO)
  • Typical good score: 95-100
  • Good: 90-95
  • Average: 85-90
  • Poor: below 85
  • Very poor: below 70

What affects the score

  • Payment history (loans, installments)
  • Current obligations (open loans)
  • Number of credit applications in a short time
  • Age of credit history
  • Charged-off debt, unpaid fees
  • Bankruptcy (Insolvenz)

What affects SCHUFA

Polish citizens — challenge

New in Germany

SCHUFA-free = no entry in SCHUFA. This is technically "not negative" but practically a problem:

  • Landlords will not rent (no SCHUFA = unknown risk)
  • Banks refuse credit cards
  • Phone providers refuse contracts
  • Leasing is difficult

Strategy for building SCHUFA

1. Open Girokonto (current account)

The first step. Polish banks in Germany (Deutsche Bank, Commerzbank, Sparkasse, mBank) or fintechs (N26, Revolut, DKB).

  • SCHUFA-positive entry created when the account opens
  • Automatic if successful
  • First positive entry

2. Sign up for a phone/internet contract

2-year mobile contract (Telekom, Vodafone, O2):

  • Monthly payments build positive history
  • Pay always on time
  • After 6-12 months — positive score

3. Prepaid credit card

Often easier than an unsecured credit card:

  • Deposit money
  • Use like a credit card
  • After 6-12 months — graduation to regular CC

4. Small consumer loan

€500-2,000 for small purchases:

  • 12-month plan
  • Every installment on time
  • Builds positive history fast

5. Avoid multiple credit applications

Each application = "Anfrage" in SCHUFA. Multiple in a short time = negative impact.

Negative entries

What creates a negative entry

  • Unpaid bill that went to collection
  • Court judgment for debt
  • Charge-off (recognized loss by creditor)
  • Insolvenz (bankruptcy)
  • Unpaid loan

Duration

  • Unpaid debts paid: 3 years from payment
  • Small debts (< €2,000) paid within 6 months: removed faster
  • Insolvenz: 3 years from the end of the procedure
  • Open/active debt: until paid or statute of limitations

Reform 2023-25

Some changes:

  • Insolvenz entry shortened from 6 years to 3 years (from completion)
  • "Restschuldbefreiung" entries removed after 6 months
  • Litigation ongoing — more changes may occur

Disputing errors

How to file

  1. Order Datenkopie
  2. Identify errors
  3. Gather documents (proof of payment, contract details)
  4. Online form: schufa.de/dispute
  5. Or letter to SCHUFA: SCHUFA Holding AG, Postfach 10 25 66, 44725 Bochum
  6. SCHUFA must review within 30 days
  7. Decision: corrected or maintained
  8. You can file with the state data protection authority if rejected

Special situations

Housing without SCHUFA

Strategies for newcomers:

  • Paid rents "miet-bezahl-historie" from PL — some landlords accept
  • Guarantor — sponsor with good SCHUFA
  • Higher deposit (max 3 months cold rent legal limit)
  • Pre-paid rent 3-6 months upfront
  • "WG" (flatshare) instead of your own apartment — easier
  • Newer SCHUFA score showing positive (a few months after Anmeldung)

Polish credit history

Polish BIK does NOT transfer to SCHUFA. No Nova Credit equivalent. Polish credit history "doesn't exist" in Germany.

Insolvenz history from Poland

Polish bankruptcy does NOT appear in SCHUFA. Polish citizens with Polish insolvency can start clean in Germany.

Cross-border worker (PL-DE)

Living in PL, working in Germany without residence in Germany:

  • SCHUFA may be limited (no German address)
  • May affect credit access in Germany
  • Bank account in Germany still possible
