Bringing kabanosy in your suitcase to Chicago is a topic for another guide – but what about the other side of the journey? What can you legally bring to Poland from the USA, the United Kingdom, or Canada, how much cash can you transport without declaring, are American THC gummies just a "supplement," and will an old book from grandma pass through customs on the way back? We have gathered the current customs limits, food bans, medication transport rules, the TAX FREE procedure, and regulations on exporting artifacts – all according to the state as of July 2026, based on official sources from KAS, granica.gov.pl, and EU regulations.
Beware of circulating misinformation: some blogs write about "new limits from 2026" (e.g., 6 liters of alcohol, 400 cigarettes). This is false – the official limits from the Ministry of Finance remain unchanged in 2026. Always check on podatki.gov.pl or granica.gov.pl.
Duty-Free Limits When Entering Poland from Outside the EU
A traveler bringing non-commercial items (for personal use or gifts) in personal luggage does not pay customs duties and taxes up to the following values:
| Category | By Air / Sea | By Land |
|---|---|---|
| Goods in total (per person, per trip) | 430 EUR | 300 EUR |
| Cigarettes (from 17 years) | 200 pcs. | only 40 pcs. |
| Strong alcohol (over 22%) | 1 liter | 1 liter |
| or alcohol up to 22% (e.g., fortified, sparkling wine) | 2 liters | 2 liters |
| additionally: still wine | 4 liters | 4 liters |
| additionally: beer | 16 liters | 16 liters |
Important rules: limits are per person and do not combine – a family of four cannot "combine" 4 × 430 EUR for one laptop worth 1700 EUR, and the value of a single item cannot be split. Alcohol and tobacco are only allowed for individuals aged 17 and over. Exceeding the limit? Go through the red channel and declare the goods – you will pay customs duty and VAT on the excess, but you will avoid liability under the Fiscal Penal Code (failure to declare is an offense or fiscal crime with a fine of up to 720 daily rates). Items that you took out of Poland and are bringing back (your laptop, camera) are exempt from fees – it is advisable to have a receipt or proof of purchase in case of questions.
Cash: Declaration Required from 10,000 EUR
When bringing into or taking out of the EU cash with a total value of 10,000 EUR or more, you must submit a customs declaration (forms PL/EN available on granica.gov.pl; it can also be reported electronically via PUESC – the "foreign currency declaration" service). Everything counts together: banknotes and coins in any currency, traveler's checks, and bearer checks, as well as gold coins (with a purity of 90% or more) and gold bars (from 99.5%). Failure to declare or false declaration can result in a fine of up to 720 daily rates, and the funds may be temporarily detained. The American side of this journey (limit $10,000 and FinCEN Form 105) is described in a separate guide on declaring cash at the US border, and safer ways to transfer money to family than cash are discussed in the guide on money donations within the family.
Food: Meat and Dairy from Outside the EU are Completely Banned.
This surprises most people: from countries outside the EU (including the USA, Canada, and also from the United Kingdom – post-Brexit, it is a third country) you cannot bring any meat or dairy products in your luggage – in any quantity. The ban also includes composite products: a ham sandwich from the ferry, beef jerky, meat-filled pierogi, pastries with cream. Exceptions and limits (EU Regulation 2019/2122):
- Powdered milk and infant formulas and special medical food: up to 2 kg, shelf-stable, in closed branded packaging (similarly, special therapeutic pet food).
- Fish (fresh, gutted, or processed): up to 20 kg or one fish if it weighs more.
- Honey and some other products (e.g., snails, mussels): up to 2 kg in total.
- Fruits, vegetables, plants, and cut flowers from outside the EU require a phytosanitary certificate – with exactly five exceptions: bananas, coconuts, dates, pineapples, and durians. Dried, frozen, and processed plant products are exempt.
- American candies, peanut butter, and meatless snacks pass without issue (within the 430 EUR limit). Chocolate and cookies containing milk are formally in a gray area – in practice tolerated, but the final decision rests with customs; anything with meat or fresh dairy will be confiscated.
Medications: Limit of 5 Packages and the Trap of American Prescriptions
Regular medications: maximum of 5 smallest packages
For personal use, you can bring to Poland up to five smallest registered packages of a given medication (Article 68(5) of the Pharmaceutical Law) – without any permits. Note: shipping medications by mail or courier to Poland is prohibited – only personal transport is legal.
Psychotropic and narcotic medications: GIF document required
The limit of 5 packages does not apply to narcotic and psychotropic substances – this includes popular American medications like Adderall, Ritalin, or Xanax. To bring them in, you need a document from the Chief Pharmaceutical Inspector (valid for 30 days, issued up to 15 days before crossing the border, separate for each substance, based on a prescription and medical documentation).
THC: it is not a supplement, it is a crime
American gummies and products with delta-9 or delta-8 THC – legal in many states – are subject to the Drug Prevention Act in Poland (only hemp products with up to 0.3% THC are allowed). Bringing them in is possession of drugs – a crime, not a customs offense. Leave them in the USA.
Insulin, syringes, medical equipment
Granica.gov.pl recommends having a medical certificate (preferably translated) confirming the illness and the necessity of using medications and equipment.
Exporting from Poland: Artifacts, Old Books, Military Items, Amber
A permit for exporting an artifact abroad is required only when the item exceeds both the age and value thresholds from Article 51 of the Act on the Protection of Monuments. The most important thresholds:
| Category | Age | Value |
|---|---|---|
| Archaeological finds, elements of historic buildings | over 100 years | any |
| Paintings | over 50 years | over 40,000 PLN |
| Watercolors, gouaches, pastels | over 50 years | over 16,000 PLN |
| Sculptures | over 50 years | over 20,000 PLN |
| Photographs, films | over 50 years | over 6,000 PLN |
| Manuscripts | over 50 years | over 4,000 PLN |
| Books | over 100 years | over 6,000 PLN |
| Maps and printed music | over 150 years | over 6,000 PLN |
| Vehicles (e.g., classic cars) | over 50 years | over 32,000 PLN |
| Other categories of antiques | over 50 years | over 16,000 PLN |
Practically: a hundred-year-old prayer book from grandma worth a few hundred PLN does not require a permit (it does not exceed the value threshold) – but it is advisable to have an appraisal or proof of purchase in case of questions. Permanent export permits are issued by the Minister of Culture (through the Chief Conservator of Monuments), temporary permits by the provincial conservator of monuments, and for library materials – by the director of the National Library. Illegal export is a crime (from 3 months to 5 years in prison with possible confiscation of the item). Registered artifacts and public collections are not exportable at all. Amber: jewelry and amber purchased legally – without restrictions (keep receipts); only antique amber may fall under the thresholds in the table. Military items and weapons (including historical ones) require Police consent for export – consult with the conservator and Police before packing demilitarized WWII memorabilia. When relocating your entire property to Poland, separate, favorable rules apply – we describe them in the guide on relocation property.
TAX FREE: Living in the USA? You Can Recover VAT from Polish Purchases
Few in the Polish diaspora know this: VAT refunds for travelers are available to those with permanent residence outside the EU – residency, not citizenship, determines eligibility, so a Pole permanently residing in the USA qualifies. Rules: minimum 200 PLN on one receipt from a seller in the TAX FREE system, electronic TAX FREE document issued at the time of purchase, export of goods in an unaltered state in personal luggage no later than the end of the third month after the month of purchase, electronic confirmation of export by KAS officials upon departure (show the goods and documents; if departing through another EU country, confirmation is provided by the customs office there). The refund is paid by the seller – in cash or by transfer.
On the Way Back: Limits from the USA and the United Kingdom (Summary)
- USA (resident returning after 48 hours): exemption of $800 per person, including 1 liter of alcohol (21+) and 200 cigarettes; everything must be declared (details: CBP "Know Before You Go"). Polish ham and kabanosy – prohibited on the American side.
- United Kingdom: 42 liters of beer + 18 liters of wine + 4 liters of strong alcohol (or 9 liters up to 22%), 200 cigarettes, other goods up to £390. Note the British trap: exceeding the limit means paying tax on the entire category, not just on the excess.
Pet Travel (Summary)
- USA → Poland (dog/cat): ISO microchip (implanted before vaccination), rabies vaccination (no earlier than at 12 weeks of age) + 21 days waiting period, EU health certificate issued by an accredited veterinarian and certified by the USDA (valid for 10 days upon entry), maximum of 5 animals. Note – recent change in regulations: from April 22, 2026, a new delegated regulation (EU) 2026/131 with new certificate templates will be in effect (old templates will be issued temporarily until October 1, 2026). Confirm the current template with your veterinarian and on the EC website before flying.
- Poland → USA (dog): from August 2024, the CDC requires: dog at least 6 months old, with a microchip, healthy, with a free CDC Dog Import Form (online, valid for 6 months). Poland is a low-risk rabies country, so traveling only from Poland usually suffices – but the regulations are new, verify on cdc.gov before flying.
Practical minimum before customs: (1) calculate the value of gifts – limit 430 EUR (300 EUR by land) per person; (2) meat, dairy, and THC stay across the ocean; (3) psychotropic medications only with GIF documentation; (4) cash from 10,000 EUR – declaration (can be done online via PUESC); (5) if you live outside the EU – take TAX FREE documents for Polish purchases; (6) check old items against the threshold table before packing. Current border information: granica.gov.pl and the official app "Asystent Granica."
