UK driving — overview
A UK resident must have a valid UK driving licence. A Polish licence has limited validity for UK residents.
Visitor status
A Polish licence is valid in the UK for:
- 12 months from arrival if "non-resident" (tourist, short stay)
- Only requires Polish licence + passport
Resident status
After 12 months as a UK resident, YOU MUST:
- Exchange your Polish licence for a UK licence, OR
- Pass the UK driving test (if the licence is from a non-designated country)
Polish licence — exchange
Pre-Brexit Polish licence (issued before 1 Jan 2021)
Exchange without a test:
- EU/EEA designated country
- Polish licence valid
- UK licence valid until the Polish licence expiration date (NOT 70 years as full UK)
- After expiration — UK renews normally
Post-Brexit Polish licence (issued after 1 Jan 2021)
Status complicated — depending on UK-EU agreements:
- Currently still possible to exchange without a test (EU members fall under "designated country" rules)
- Some EU countries require a practical test post-Brexit — check current regulations
- Poland generally cooperative
Categories
The UK exchanges categories from the Polish licence. Typically:
- Polish B → UK B (car)
- Polish A → UK A (motorbike)
- Polish C, D → UK C, D (truck, bus) — may require additional medical tests
