The wait at the Social Security office, hours on the IRS hotline, letters from USCIS that take weeks – most of these matters can now be resolved online in just a few minutes. The U.S. administration has quietly digitized: through the my Social Security account, you can order a duplicate SSN card and certificates, in the IRS account you can set up tax installment payments, and you can submit your citizenship application (N-400) entirely online. This guide walks you through all the key U.S. e-services from the perspective of the Polish diaspora – including what is no longer available in 2026 (Direct File eliminated, Polish IRS pages removed) and where you can still receive service in Polish (SSA!).
The Key to Everything: Login.gov and ID.me
- Login.gov is a single government account for dozens of agencies (SSA, USAJOBS, Global Entry…). Identity verification requires: a state driver's license/ID or U.S. passport, SSN, and a U.S. phone number or address. Two-factor authentication is mandatory. Languages: English, Spanish, French, Chinese – Polish is not available.
- ID.me is a private, officially accepted identity provider (IRS, SSA, VA, Medicare): verification via document and selfie, and if the automated process fails – a video call with a consultant (“Trusted Referee”). Important for those splitting their lives between countries: according to SSA, ID.me works from outside the U.S. – you can create and manage your account from Poland.
- Order Note: the rule of “only .gov domains” has two official exceptions – ID.me and CLEAR are legal government partners. Treat everything else that looks “government-like” outside of .gov with suspicion.
my Social Security: The Most Important Account for the Polish Diaspora
At ssa.gov/myaccount, you can handle without phone calls and visits: duplicate SSN cards, address changes, direct deposit account updates, benefit verification letters, tax forms, full earnings history, and retirement forecasts at various ages – and from 2026, also online repayment of overpayments. Two things are worth knowing:
- Old SSA logins are becoming obsolete: accounts created using the old method (username from a few years ago) require transitioning to Login.gov or ID.me – do this at your next login before you lose access.
- SSA is the last bastion of Polish language in federal administration: the ssa.gov/multilanguage page has a “Polish” section with brochures and – most importantly – free telephone translators upon request. Use this, especially for retirement matters (we discuss combining U.S. and Polish pensions in our guide on U.S. and Polish pensions).
Change in Language Climate (2025/2026): following the decree establishing English as the official language of the U.S., the old rule guaranteeing service in other languages was repealed – the lep.gov service has been suspended, and IRS has removed its Polish pages (irs.gov/pl now returns a 404 error; the IRS language list has shrunk to 7 languages without Polish). Multilingual services have become discretionary and are shrinking – do not assume that a Polish version of anything will exist in a year; for difficult matters, bring a trusted bilingual person or request a telephone translator (SSA still provides this; in hospitals, a translator is still your right – see our guide on free translators in hospitals).
IRS Account: Taxes Without Lines
- IRS Online Account (login via ID.me or Login.gov): balances for individual years, transcripts (including AGI needed for e-filing), refund status, digital correspondence, immediate or planned payments for up to a year ahead, payment history for 5 years, and – very practically – setting up and changing installment plans online.
- Direct File does not exist: the government’s free filing program was eliminated in 2025 (pages return 404). The free option remains Free File – commercial programs at no cost for AGI incomes up to $89,000 (for the 2025 tax year) and Fillable Forms without limit; free live assistance is provided by the VITA program (income up to ~69k USD, individuals 60+, and those needing language support).
- ITIN (tax number for individuals without SSN – e.g., spouses without status) is still handled exclusively on paper (W-7, about 7–11 weeks) – there is no online pathway.
USCIS Online: From Green Card to Citizenship
- The myUSCIS account allows you to submit fully electronically several forms – including N-400 (citizenship application), I-90 (green card replacement), I-130, I-131, I-765, or address change AR-11 – with prompts to reduce errors, payment by card, and case tracking. You can check processing times using the official tool at egov.uscis.gov/processing-times.
- The old “InfoPass” visits are no longer available – contact is through self-service tools, the chatbot Emma (English and Spanish), and the hotline 800-375-5283; in-person meetings are only by appointment.
